It is recommended that the leadership team’s membership in a single role is four terms maximum and two terms minimum.

Please note that these are recommendations and not requirements. Next, note that this recommendation is for a particular role and not just membership with the team.

The two term minimum is somewhat obvious because we want to ensure that the leadership team is not unstable in roles being filled/unfilled constantly. Onboarding someone into a position is a large time commitment so ideally that investment is paid forward which will take some time.

The four term maximum is intended to prevent stagnation. Within the context of Waterloo engineering, four terms is 1.3 years, or a little over one competition cycle (assuming we stick with our current cycle). If a member is in the same role for that amount of time, this should be a gentle nudge that either the role needs to change or the leadership team should start thinking about a future after the member is gone so that the next level of leadership can step up and build up, rather than having knowledge leave the team after being held by a few concentrated individuals. Further, people who don’t see a path to growth on the organization, whether through leadership or some other way, tend to get demotivated and leave - a lack of positions or “this person has always been in this role” fails to create the organic growth we want in this organization, where people see themselves growing with responsibility. While WARG wants to hold onto talent the goal is here is to avoid stagnation and help people realize their own potential.
