General Notes

  • What we want to show at symposium:

    • Flying, landing, swapping, taking off again

    • There’s another team that wanted to use RoboHub (Andy’s team)

  • They’ve had people demo in RoboHub before, but the team got frustrated because no one was going to their booth — its possible to put us beside the RoboHub, and then view the demo through the window

    • People still might not notice what our project is from afar, since all our equipment will be in RoboHub

    • However we do have a lot of spare batteries and equipment

  • Paul recommends that we do a static demo, and then show a video of the flying, landing, swapping, taking off

    • We can have RoboHub as a backup if we wanted to do a live demo of the full thing to the judges

  • The judges are looking for technical details—what did you do? How did you do this? Etc.

  • Another option:

    • Setting up a net on the second floor

    • We’d be sharing this net with other teams that are using it

  • For now, Paul’s gonna put us on Floor 1

  • He’s going to do a layout over reading week and will let us know after that

  • Paul is doing the planning for other symposiums as well

  • Is there less competition for the RoboHub in other symposiums?

    • Paul doesn’t know

    • Paul will ask if we can be at the Syde or Mechanical symposium

  • How many rounds of judges?

    • There are 2 judges per group, and they may not be together

Hazards

  • Batteries

    • Is there a battery management system? I.e. is there some way to determine when it’s drawing a current below a certain threshold

      • When it’s in the drone, the battery state is constantly monitored

    • When charging the batteries, how can we know that the cells are balanced?

      • We have a balancing circuit — this is ok with Paul

      • Day-of the symposium, we need to show the charging/discharging of the battery to demonstrate its safety

  • Rules for power supplies

    • The CSA-approved power supply should be in an enclosure — no exposed terminals are allowed

      • However the exposed terminal is just 12 V

    • Can we put it in an enclosure?

      • ______

    • If our power supply isn’t approved, we could definitely just power our system from a battery

      • And this can be done day-of the inspection

      • Paul will ask Richard to confirm, but for now assume that this is ok

        • What kind of battery would we use instead?

          • Either a bunch of LiPos or what we currently have

  • Drone

    • Everything that we do ON the drone should be fine

  • 1 or 2 drones for symposium?

    • Probably will do only 1 for symposium, but have the second drone for display during symposium

Other Symposium Details

  • The tables for symposium are smaller than the ones available in the WARG bay, so we’ll probably need two — Paul will ask about getting us 2 tables

  • We will have another meeting with Richard for electrical safety requirements — we don’t all need to be there, even just 1 of us meeting with Richard is enough

Post-Meeting Debrief

  • Path forward to CEC? A few options:

    • Just show up late and say our flight was delayed

      • Risky — they might not let us compete in that case, and if so, maybe the travel expenses will be our responsibility

    • Say that we were not given permission to change our symposium date

      • The CEC organizers might then just replace us with the 3rd place team

    • Have half of our team show up on time, the other half go to regular Tron symposium

      • This one has potential, but this still means only half of us are presenting at symposium

Questions for Paul

  • Does the power rule apply if we demo in the robohub, not in open space?

  • We probably wont be able to present at TRON symposium. Do the other symposiums have different safety rules we should consider? Do we need to do our safety review with someone else?
