2023-03-07 ICARUS Sync

Meeting Scope

  • Track state of new Cornflakes airframe post previous crash

  • Identify deliverables and owners for each subteam for flight test this weekend

  • Look into long-term flight test planning (general flow of what we would like to ideally test)

Other Concerns

  • Setting the risk tolerance for this flight test is CRITICAL

  • Balancing risking motors on this test and having motors for the competition aircraft

  • Are we actually able to get new batteries in time for competition

    • Have team funds if required, but need a limit on how to be done

    • Can order on short notice to get batteries earlier if required

  • Do we have funds to afford any of this ?

  • Icarus sync also needs to cover what Electrical system architecture needs to be done and when

    • These need owners assigned

Flight Test Outlook

March 11th

Mar 11, 2023 Cornflakes Validation - Flight Tests - WARG (atlassian.net)

  • Fixed wing flight validation

    • We attempted this last flight test, what are we trying differently to make this happen

  • Yaw characterization (two modes)

    • What are the two modes ?

      • Motors vertical, and on a 3 degree vertical angle

  • Battery life characterization

    • Do we have new batteries to do characterization with. From @Hamza Ali I’ve heard we may not have new batteries before comp and may be doing this flight test on the previously crashed batteries

  • “RTL”

    • What part of RTL are we testing and why ?

    • Like we know ardupilot worky right ?

    • We tested this on Houston and it worked last flight test

  • Expect to have to recharge batteries between two testing cycles.

    • What does this mean ?

March 18th

Mar 18, 2023 Flight Test - Flight Tests - WARG (atlassian.net)

  • “CS1” Data collection

    • How much energy required to land/take-off, fly a certain distance, etc.

    • Get a much better idea on aircraft characterization as a whole

  • auto-land precision

    • How close to target can Ardupilot land given the waypoint, whether CV will be required

  • fixed wing flight battery drain

    • Estimating based on the health of the current battery to extrapolate to new/healthier batteries

  • guided flight modes

  • video link

    • Want VTX to be ready for flight, to be used for BVLOS flight - test for unstable voltage, etc.

April 1st

Hold for: Icarus frame validation

Control Surfaces

  • Control rods - completed effective March 7th

    • Ensure functionality

    • Mount servos

  • Better control horn design (new CAD model, Is this manufacturing or CAD ??? )

    • in progress, Luke

    • May be bought off Amazon if required

    • Maybe we wait till end of week to add control horns

@Alison Thompson

New front motor mount

  • Mount new motors

  • Electrical would like to consider making something to somewhat protect the motor in the case of a crash

    • Tiny dents in the motors completely destroys them, having some sacrificial metal would be clutch but may push our timeline on this

    • We are already cutting into out competition motors supply

      • Motors shifted back so props break first, motor mounts shifted back

      • First step - take pictures and get motors repaired @Nolan Haines (Email Daniel Tang from T-Motors, refer Anthony L)

      • Crash chances decrease significantly if FBW and Quad is verified and works well

    • Ordered longer screws for angled motor mounts

@Alison Thompson

Electrical

  • Verify component functionality

    • This is ESC and motor combo functionality ASAP

      • Verify how many ESCs are currently working

@Nolan Haines

PDB

  • The PDB from last flight test needs components replaced to be flight ready, we have mostly soldered up our one spare in preparation for using that in this flight test though it still needs some work to be ready

  • Solder on two XT90 connectors

  • For later - replace input resistors on older PDB

@Farris Matar

Cornflakes soldering/wiring harness

  • Mount Pixhawk, PDB, ESCs

  • Connect and harness all wires

  • Connect and mount GPS

@Nolan Haines

Sysint

End-to-end functionality test

  • RC Link with antenna

  • Control surfaces work (all servos)

  • Motors run the right direction

  • GPS, IMU works

  • Calibration of compass, accelerometer

Cabin - skin, main cylinder build @Conall Kingshott

  • Tube frame of cabin mostly built - need to replace two 3D printed joints

  •

  • Tasks TBD:

    • Need to replace two 3D printed joints in tubing box

    • Skin is going to attach to foam ribs using velcro (Mostly done)

    • Will need some holes made for camera and mounting to frame.

      • For CV Camera and OFS

Stiffener for Battery Compartment - @Hrishik Patel

  • Tasks:

    • Design done, ready to be printed?

Landing gear - @Alison Thompson

  • Mostly assembled, just got new prints done

  • Will be done once Cornflakes is done

  • Going to look into a stabilizer to run horizontally between both sides to stop them from bowing out on impact

Nose/tail - @Andrew Wright

  • Tasks:

    • To glue second nose cone? (foam)

    • Integrate camera on the nose

Avionics bay - @Conall Kingshott

  • We’re gonna wait on the interface to be done for this. Dremel on fiberglass will be nasty.

  • Tasks:

    • On hold until integration w Electrical is complete and there is a better idea on things

    • Need to determine where the cabin will be mounted wrt center of mass, further changes can’t be made until that is determined

Bay door - @Vishal Jayakumar

  • it’s printed in lightweight PLA, just hasn’t been fixed to door. @Hrishik Patel was doing cabin assembly, can possibly help with attaching door

  • We need a piece of carbon fiber for this (maybe @Andrew Wright )

  • Tasks:

    • Need to attach printed staircase to the cabin

Miscellaneous Tasks:

  • Depending on how yaw control changes on cornflakes with angled motors, changes will be made to Icarus as required

Best estimate of readiness: 3rd April

@Conall Kingshott

@Megan Spee

Electrical

Avionics:

  • Need a sync on what electronics is being laid out and what connects where (ZP, Jetson, etc.)

    • Architecture decisions:

      • Which sensors are connected to ZP, Pixhawk

      • How each of the boards connect to one another

      • Lay out wiring block diagram within architecture doc as RFC

      • Sync-up offline between Electrical and EFS wrt electrical organization

      • Two diagrams - block diagram of all components, and bird’s eye view of the aircraft (on wings, avionics bay, etc.)

    • Key contacts:

      • PX5, PX6: @Aidan Bowers (Deactivated) @Anthony Luo @Nathan Green

      • ZeroPilot: @Christopher Chung @Anthony Luo

      • Jetson: @Jinghao Lei @Anthony Luo

      • RF + VTX: @Anthony Luo @Nathan Green

      • Sensors: @Anthony Luo @Christopher Chung @Aidan Bowers (Deactivated)

      • Physical Placement on Drone: @Conall Kingshott @Megan Spee

    • Lighting:

      • Determine how and what type of lighting will be used in line with CONOPS

      • Take into consideration for power architecture

    • @Anthony Luo will submit RFC re electrical block diagram on a barebones level

  • Need further updates on power architecture

    • Contingent to determining what needs to be powered and how things will be wired
