This WeekendIntro

Conall Kingshott

No mech work session this weekend.

We will be doing a hover test, so stay tuned and check out the relevant thread.

Electronics Cases

  • LTE Case

  • VTX / Antenna Case

Frame

Smile Khatri and I fixed our fastener woes this evening, so we are ready to fly whenever.

Feet need holes drilled for them and to be mounted.

Monster mount going on for flight test? Not sure yet

Possible shroud/clamping block updates from Andy and Jonathan

No other major changes here.

Antenna Tracker

Arjun Mandair

  • New Servo Mount

    • Cutouts for screw clearance

  • I want to order the servo, hex gear, and hex bearings: Servo, Gear Mechanism, & Bearings

  • Conall Kingshott Are we 100% sure that the gear system and servo will rotate everything?

    • To the best of my understanding, it should. That’s the best I think we’re gonna get. -C

  • Who should I contact for ordering?

We’re a bit slow now because of reading week and midterms coming up, and that’s alright! Hopefully meeting is reasonably quick.

Flight tests

We attempted a hover test this weekend. We flipped the drone, but the problem has been diagnosed. Not damage on the mechanical front.

There will be a flight test this weekend, trying hover again. More info is here:

    • Started Electronics Mounts

      • Need to modify Buck Converter Mount to add side holes for ventilation

      • Nucleo mount is temporary for prototyping purposes with the Perf Board

      • Should 6S battery mount utilize velcro? I can create slots for this

        • Consider 6S battery 30ft in the air, do not want it to fall on someone

        • I think is is a valid concern. Maybe consider either supporting geometry (Ie: Box) or something like a buckle. -C

    Next Steps

  • Anthony and I had a discussion on the Antenna Tracker: Tracking Antenna Mechanical Tasks and Electrical Components

  • Continue mounting RC and Video Components

  • Need to see if I can combine the two or if I need to make two distinct towers

    Arjun Mandair

This is going on a bit of a break for the moment because Arjun is busy and we don’t have other people to support it atm. If anyone has a concern with that, please contact me directly.

    Cabin

    Alison Thompson

    • Cabin design still underway!Update from AEAC sync, no opposition to cargo bay in the back

    • Evan Janakievski want to talk through skeleton updates? Skeleton My thoughts:

      • My orginal thoughts for seat layout to avoid a middle asile was something like this to allow for a big window in the front, though totally open to nixing that idea in favour of your seat layout (no big window will make assembly easier but may hurt aestheics?) thoughts?

      • I’d suggest that where ever we decide to have the cargo/cabin divide we add another 2 vertical CF tubes to give use something to mount hinge and a divider?

      • For simpicity maybe the divide is also where we have the hinge for the passenger cabin and the back standoff is where the hinge for the cargo bay is? Want thoughts on this, particularly Georgia Vachon Westerlund

    • Georgia Vachon Westerlund want to talk through your updates in Aero-Panels ? My thoughts:

      • CAD isn’t checked in so I haven’t seen it (maybe add screenshot in the doc when you have the time?) but the sketch in there looks good for the first version!

      • One suggestion, maybe the front and back panels extend a bit back so the top and bottom of them has flat bits to mount with the existing skeleton bolts and then we just use the other mounting method for the side panels? bad paint drawing:

      • I agree carbon fiber is going to be best for most of cabin, will likely want some cut-outs in CF for some sort of clear windows. I see your concern about CF manufacturing being challenging, but I think we want to try making more complex layups with moulds, though router time will be limited, want thoughts from Conall Kingshott on this

        • Flat panels are all easy. We can do under 12” in the ESMS and over 12” at the EMS. -C

        • 4mm != 4 layers. 8 layers was ~2.75mm. -C

        • We can probably start with super thin panels that are made flat, then just put on to the frame wrapped around something to get the “bent” profile similar to Icarus for the first rev. Open to thoughts though. -C

      • see above convo about doors and windows

    • Aric Quan Want to explain your idea for the aero-panel mounting in Aero-Panel Mounting ? My thoughts:

      • I like this idea so far!

      • What is stopping the pin from sliding out?

      • Alternative to the pin, could do a through bolt and a threaded heat-set insert? tbh this way you may not even need the seconded printed piece that mounts to the panels. bad paint drawing:

      • Want to hear what others think about this

    • Jason Li any seat updates? Seats has been working hard on the Skeleton !

      • Dimensions are more fleshed out now but something weird is happening with Evan’s PDM

    • Georgia Vachon Westerlund Updates to CAD and some CFD simulation results: https://uwarg-docs.atlassian.net/l/cp/qrpZo69M

      • Following the feedback from last week’s meeting, I made the front/rear panels 2 mm thick and the side panels 4 mm thick

      • Added a 50 mm (length tentative) to the top and bottom of the front/rear panels. This segment will be bent up into the cabin when it is assembled

      • Chose a bend angle of 20 degrees, this angle is tentative pending simulation results.

      • The part files in PDM have been updated in accordance with the design changes shown below:

    Image Added
    • Georgia Vachon Westerlund Ran a couple of preliminary aero CFD simulations

      • Took me a while to download and learn the software

      • Created a “control block” with similar dimensions to the cabin to be used as a basis for CFD analysis (CAD available in PDM as well):

      • Image Added
      • Used Ansys fluent to setup meshing, boundary conditions, simulation domain, etc.

      • Results are as follows:

        • Drag coefficient of ~8.61

        • Lift coefficient of 0.00395 (negligible)

      • For future simulations, would like to determine the effect of the 20 degree bend angle on the lift/drag coefficients

      • New model has already been made, just need to run that simulation later this week and compare results to the control block:

      • Image Added
      • Would like to evaluate the relationship between the bend angle and the lift/drag coefficients

      • Would like to evaluate how effective s-ducts would be (a bit more advanced, I’ll need to get more familiar with Ansys Fluent first).

    • Sohee Yoon has taken on the Aero-Panel mounting and it’s looking great! Want to explain your ideas? Aero-Panel Mounting ?

    • Jason Li want to share your seat updates? I see some nice sketches in Seats !

    • Wallace Lee are you still interested in doing Cargo Compartment ?
