Thermal Guidelines

Brief

Electronics generate heat and therefore caution should be taken.

Guidelines

  • Conformal Coat

    • offers water protection

    • must be used with caution as it prevents heat from getting out of the board

  • RF Transmitters

    • are generally the hottest electronics we work with at WARG

    • ensure proper airflow

  • ESCs

    • also get pretty hot when loaded

    • ensure proper airflow

  • Cases

    • Boards should be encased with care allowing for airflow

      • When possible including some holes in cases to allow for some passive airflow is epic!

      • Manufacturers don’t put heatsinks on products for nothing, leave the heatsink exposed!

    • Do not heat shrink over tiny boards as it can be incredibly difficult to remove without damaging the board and has terrible thermal performance.

      • Only thick stick heatshrink is the real problem. The super thin stuff is nice and commonly used for smaller quads. Bonus points if its see thru so we can see the LEDs.
