Reading Fabrics
Carbon fiber is sold based on the number of ‘cut yards’ or roll. A cut yard/layer is a piece of fabric that is 1 yard long. A roll is 100 layers. (1 yard = 3 ft = 36”)
Let’s say that we want to purchase “3.8oz x 36” 1K Plain Carbon (Cut Yards)”
Oz is the weight of the fabric per a cut yard. Higher oz means a more dense fabric. This fabric’s density is 3.8 Oz/yd^2.
The fabric is 36” wide. Hence, a layer of this fabric is 36” by 1 yard.
1K means that each tow/strand of carbon fiber has 1000 filaments of fiber. Higher K value means thicker strands.
Plain Carbon tells you the type of weave of the carbon fiber. The weave pattern affects the strength of the carbon fiber, stability, and how formable it is.
If you purchase let’s say 2 layers, then you would be purchasing a roll that is 2 yards long.
