Introduction
This document seeks to formally announce the WARG 2024 Competition Roster.
Table Of Contents
Justification
This section will explain some of the considerations that went into coming up with this roster selection.
Timing
We sent out a competition interest form ~ 6 months prior to needing to lock in the roster. A flaw was that it did not include all info we needed for forms including shirt size or emergency contact info. By the time we started weighing and comparing individual people it was a bit late to meet the deadline for submission. This resulted in some rash director decisions and poor communication internally.
Constraints
Competition informed us ~ x days before the deadline we were locked into only taking eight people to competition whereas we initially planned on taking at least ten. This immediately put pressure on us to start comparing people. We were also given four people to shortlist that if the competition had extra space we could bring as well. We investigated doing our own hotels, but decided against this due to cost and logistics challenges.
In order to fly at competition we must have at least one person who has their Transport Canada Advanced Licenses. Internally to WARG we prefer pilots who have followed our training path. Additionally, we want to feature a spare pilot in the case of illness or other unforeseen events in the future.
Interested members are also preferred based on their participation in our flight tests and flight test preparation. This is because at competition everyone will be busy and to be considered an individual needs to be useful at all times at competition. Flight test participation is how people learn the skills required to have a meaningful contribution at competition.
In a similar vain, involvement in the team is highly valued. We want interested members to enjoy the privledge of competition and hope their interest in the team in conjunction with their participation at competition is leveraged to pass their knowledge on to more junior members.
A leadership position in WARG, ideally, indicates you’re an okay leader. Because of the pressure to perform at competition those able to lead are prioritized.
We need at least four drivers so we can take two vehicles and drive in 6 hour shifts as per SDC requirements. They need to have G or equivalent so SDC can certify. They need to be comfortable driving for long hours, older is better here.
We need to take a trailer to competition. This is required as we can take practically our entire bay with us and give us all the tools we need to succeed. This means we need people comfortable driving a small trailer for long periods of time. The university offers trailer certification so anyone with a license should be able to get it.
seniority / time on the team. more time means we want u more?
Older members without competition experience should be given a turn to go to competition rather than younger members who have already gone. This allows the experience to be spread out to more people.
Roles
All competition roles need to be filled. This boils down to we want at least one person to handle the responsibilities of each subteam. Subteams more critical to performance at competition, for this year or future years, will be prioritized. For example mechanical for maintaining the airframe is more important than x ?
Ardupilot experience and firmware experience is valued for setting up our flight controllers and remotes.
People
list who submitted the form, how they fall into constraints. just list them out?
Nathan Green has been with the team x terms, been a pilot for y terms, and more
