2024-04-06 Voting Options

Intro

There is a lot of contention between leads as to who is going to competition. This kicked off in 2024-04-01 Leads Meeting and also https://uwarg-docs.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/AD/pages/2488172575 as well as a thread in #leads. This document outlines some options for us to vote on. Nothing here is final until explicitly otherwise mentioned.

Table of Contents

Context

We have eight guaranteed slots, then four extra shortlisted. Order doesn't matter before #8 but for #9 and beyond order does matter. Only leads will vote. People who are not leads uh idk we need to figure this out so u can make a pitch to leads.

People

  • Nathan

    • Summary: Pilot, Driver, Trailer, mech

    • Was at last comp, very experienced all around, ardupilot and mech specifically

  • Yuchen Lin

    • Summary: Pilot, EFS

    • has not been to a comp yet, firmware experience, ardupilot experience

  • Smile Khatri

    • summary: mech lead, driver

    • not been to comp yet, experienced in drone frame assembly

    • attended last flight test of the W24 term

  • Amy Hu

    • summary: auto lead

    • She has expressed interest in going to comp early when we asked for submissions and has worked hard to prepare herself for competition. She has attended many flight tests as Auto rep this term and also attended and lead Houston flight tests in the Fall term as well

    • She will still be active on the team after competition and can pass on the knowledge she learned to team in the summer.

    • Very knowledgeable about all components in the Autonomy systems on the drone and has lots of in-person experience integrating them onto the drone. (stole from mihir’s msg on discord)

    • I guess I'll also say something about why I want to go to the competition. First reason being, I've been on the team for a pretty long time (2 years+) and haven't gone to the comp yet. I really want to see what the team does and what is like in competitions. Also, I'd say I was the person who went to 85% of the flight tests that required an autonomy person, thus I have a pretty good understanding of how the autonomy system works. I was hoping to talk to other groups' autonomy subteams and learn from what they are doing. I'm also into taking vintage films (35mm or half frame) and recordings, so I'd say I'm pretty good at photography. I was also planning to do a video edit that looks something like this, which I think would be pretty cool. (I also have a digital camera, so if anyone thinks it would be weird to use film cameras I can just use my DSLR)

  • Emma Chan

    • summary: ops

    • She's been super active on ops carrying most digital marketing and media stuff.

    • She's also been working hard on a media plan for comp that she is super exited to make a reality.

    • She attended flight tests in the fall and has expressed interest in continuing with the team long-term. (stole from georgia’s msg on discord)

  • Evan Janakievski

    • summary: mech

    • FRC experience, excellent problem solving, cabin PM, actively involved in the team

    • strong hands-on skills, one of the most qualified mech person to have at comp (Smile’s opinion)

  • Tong Zhang

    • summary: auto lead, driver

    • Has been in the team over a year, had participated flight tests for a few times

    • worth exposing the new auto lead to flight test

    • I also think it makes more sense for Amy to go to comp then me, 1. she can do everything I can do and a lot of stuff I can't do 2. she's staying on the team after so her going has the same "global" benefits that me going has

    • I do wanna say that auto has always seemed disconnected from other subteams and in my biased opinion autonomy stuff is only gonna become a larger part of future competitions, if we want to keep doing well in the future auto needs to be more part of warg (my wording is rlly shitty here) and having 2 auto members go would be a great start to this, though obviously not at the cost of doing worse at this competition, if all non auto roles are filled tho I would rlly like both me and Amy to go

  • Aidan Bowers

    • summary: EFS, integration, GSO, trailer, driver

    • The goated man

    • Will graduate from university after winter term

  • Hardy Yu

    • summary: EFS lead, FTC

    • firmware, ardupilot, flight test coordinator experience. Can do simple ee work

  • Nathaniel

  • Conall

    • summary: mech advisor, can’t confirm with availability

    • mech goat, has been to comp, experienced with drone frame assembly

    • leadership and problem-solving skills

    • STILL WAITTING ON CO-OP

  • anthony zhelnakov

    • summary: ee

    • Joined the ee team a term ago, and had been active on zp3 project

    • Never been to flight test

    • interested ← seems like a lie

    • “Anthony said he won't go to comp, so I think we can remove him from the waitlist”

  • Ishman

    • summary: ee

    • Join the WARG a while ago, but joined ee team this term, and had been active on bec project

    • Never been to flight test

      • this is a huge concern, if waitlisted EE leads need to highly encourage flight test attendance.

    • interested

add the rest of people here and some justification and pros and cons of each. feel free to include everyone who submitted the interest form. this list isn’t complete yet

Comp Experience

Only Daniel, Nathan, and Aidan have joined the competition in the previous years. All others will get that valuable experience to pass on to next generation of WARGians. Aidan will be graduating soon / might already be graduated by comp.

Drivers

We need 4 driver and 2 trailer certified people so we can bring trailers to comp. The trailer will be very helpful. Aidan and Nathan have trailer.

People who have a G license for enough time to make them eligible for SDC training, according to form:

  • Daniel

  • Nathan

  • Aidan

  • Smile

  • Tong

  • Emma - No confirmation post-roster-form submission YET.

  • Evan (USA - washington equivalent unconfirmed)

Options

These are all options that meet the above requirements. Once we all agree there aren’t any other good options then we will proceed to voting below (and lock changes to these options). feel free to add pros and cons to each one

See below all of the lists for a “MERGER” list that will be merged with this document BEFORE 12:00-2024-04-07 (noon). These lists, until then, are INCOMPLETE. this line is kind of confusing, please clarify?

Top eight contains a solid mix of people though is a bit short on EFS. This is reasonable as both pilots have sufficient ardupilot experience. Bringing autonomy members and mech members will be great for future improvement. Emma strong pick for ops.

Conceived by Daniel.

  2. Yuchen Lin

  3. Daniel Puratich

  4. Smile Khatri

  5. Amy Hu

  6. Emma Chan

  7. Tong Zhang

  8. Hardy or Evan

Amy is the only one in auto who consistently participated in flight tests in the past few terms, also this comp might be the last chance for her to go.

Emma because someone from ops has to go insert reason here.

Tong is the only driver who is not on the fixed spot except for Aidan and is a new auto lead.

The 8th place is decided between Hardy and Evan depending on how heavy the mech work is. If mech ppl is still needed in the comp with current mech lead Smile and previous mech lead Nathan, then we should go with Evan.

Both people can offload Nathan’s work on different aspects.
