Flight Testing Safely
Drones that WARG creates have large propellers that can be dangerous when coming in contact with humans and other objects. It is important to flight test in a safe manner to maximize the safety of all those involved as well as the aircraft itself.
Before a Flight Test
Plan a purpose and motive of a flight test.
Ensure meeting a flight test is not rushed, the aircraft is properly built, and pilots are fully informed
Ensure all pilots read the LiPo battery and safety procedure and follow it. Prepare batteries early and ensure they are safe for use.
Brief all members of the flight test on the purpose of the flight test
Delegate a pilot in command for the duration of the flight test
Ensure the flight test location.
When flying in doors within the SDC, flying any aircraft that is not tethered to the ground is strictly prohibited. Under no circumstances should an aircraft be flying indoors that is not tethered.
Flying within the bay is strictly prohibited, no matter how small the aircraft. Under no circumstances should an aircraft be armed with propellers within the bay.
If flying outdoors, account for proper transportation for those participating in the flight test, both to the flight test location as well as on the way back before leaving.
Ensure if members are not travelling together, they have a way to communicate with one another.
If travelling in a group, ensure that everyone is briefed on the schedule of the flight test. Try to stay in contact, and announce any changes in plans, deviations, and detours to the entire flight test group.
During a flight test
Ensure all members of the flight test group are aware of the plan for the flight test, including but not limited to:
Flight duration
Flight path/direction
Safety captain and safety procedures
Before powering on an aircraft, alert all members you intend to do so
Before arming the aircraft, check your surroundings and ensure it is safe to do so
Inform all members that you intend to arm and fly soon
Do not distract the pilots of the aircraft during flight, let them focus on piloting
Abort a flight test immediately in case of unsafe conditions. In order of importance, consider at all times:
The safety of yourself
The safety of those around and near the aircraft
The safety of the aircraft
Clearly communicate after the completion of a flight. Make it clear whether you intend to continue to fly or stop.
In the case of injury, immediately abort the flight test
After a flight test
Debrief the flight test and ensure everyone involved has the opportunity to comment on the flight test
Document any and all notable items from the flight test.
In the case of a crash or failure, perform an RCA with the members of the flight test group on Confluence.
In the case of an injury, ensure the situation is fully documented and communicated with the leadership of the team.
Ensure all batteries are properly discharged and stored at the storage voltage
Dispose any damaged batteries, do not store them as soon as possible
