Battery

Battery

  1. We are going to leave this issue for after we have the power figures and can figure out the current draw. Also considering a hybrid approach with a small li-poly for high draw scenarios (takeoff) and a large li-ion for cruising.

1. Background

  • All Li-Po and Li-ion cells are ~3.7V.

    • Multiple cells are stacked in series to form batteries, indicated by [number of cells]s. A 4s battery contains 4 cells with a overall voltage of 14.8V.

    • Batteries typically contain a even number of cells.

2. Candidates

3. Options

Li-Po

Li-Ion

Li-Po

Li-Ion

Pros

  • Stable

  • Wide operating temps (50-100 C°)

  • Inexpensive (~$50)

  • Higher specific energy (150-200 W-h/kg)

Cons

  • Lower specific energy (100-150 W-h/kg)

  • Low operating temps (0-60 C°)

  • Expensive (~$100)

  • Volatile and flammable, specific charging requirements

  • Limited current draw

  • Raw leads
