Charter

Preamble and Identity

The University of Waterloo Aerial Robotics Group (abbreviated as ‘WARG’) is a student design team affiliated with the Sedra Student Design Centre at the University of Waterloo. The following document outlines the basic principles, values, and administration of this design team. This document was formally adopted by the team effective Nov 23, 2021.

The team name may be abbreviated to ‘Waterloo Aerial Robotics Group’ without loss of effect.

Purpose

The principal objectives of WARG are:

  • To enable students to learn about robotics and develop innovative new aerial robotic solutions through collaboration and non-classroom instruction.

  • To expose students to all aspects of project management, fundraising, marketing and exposure to various mechanical, electrical and controls challenges.

  • To provide an opportunity for students (of all backgrounds) and experts to work together in an effort to accomplish these goals.

These objectives are typically met through a student competition that focuses on custom aerial robotic solutions.

Membership

WARG membership is open to any person from the University of Waterloo. The specifics as to how a member can become part of WARG are left to the direction of the leadership team.

  • Admission and continued participation as a full member of WARG is contingent upon constructive contribution and good character as evaluated by the leadership team.

Leadership Team

Team Lead(s) / Director(s)

  • The team lead(s) directs the day-to-day operations of WARG. They are responsible for maintaining and managing WARG’s professional relationships, speaking on behalf of the team, and verifying that high-level tasks are on track.

  • This position shall be appointed by the existing membership of the leadership team by a 2/3-majority vote.

  • The position of team lead may be split among 2 people.

    • Note: this STEMS from the SDC requirement to have a team lead on-stream.

Sub-team Lead(s)

  • Sub-team leads to manage the various departments in WARG. Sub-team leads are experts in their department and can provide in-depth knowledge to their department. They are responsible for the progress of their department and are responsible for implementing the high-level tasks with respect to their subteam.

  • This position shall be appointed by the existing membership of the leadership team by a 2/3-majority vote.

  • The position of sub-team lead may be split among 2 people.

Equipment

All supplies and equipment purchased by or donated to WARG are property of this team unless alternate terms have been agreed upon with the leadership team.

Finances

The team lead or appropriate designate (i.e. finance lead or similar) is responsible for the financials of WARG. They shall maintain a ledger of all financial transactions and protocols associated with purchasing items for the team.

  • Purchases require the approval of one leadership team member, unless the purchaser is a member of the leadership team in which case the approver cannot be the purchaser.

  • Purchases greater than $1000 require the approval of the faculty advisor.
