Wings

Nathaniel & Thushanth

Nathaniel:

  • NACA 2412 and 4412 are popular choices for RC planes due to thinner design for lower drag

    • Slight under cambered design provides additional lift

  • Is there anything we should initially prioritize?

    • Eg. Low stall speed, reduced drag at cruising, stability

  • Ran a quick CFD sim for a NACA 4412 to see if its beneficial for future testing

    • Found L/D ratio of 11.36

    • L/D of around 20 is typically found for RC planes (just wings)

  • Possible next steps:

    • Choose some types of wings like: NACA 2412, Semi-symmetrical, Clark-Y, Selig and compare sims

    • Determine some important testing conditions

      • Speed (stall, takeoff, landing, cruising)

      • AOA and other angles to test at

      • Reynolds number (hoping Thushanth can speak more to this)

        • value representing turbulent flow

        • Causes more drag

        • chord length affects Reynold’s number

      • Weight and wingspan → If 5kg and 2ft 4ft is firm, we can design around this

      • Drag and lift scale with velocity^2

  • S1223 airfoil

  • High aspect ratio for low speed

  • 9in chord length → ~5 aspect ratio

  • Discuss control surfaces

    • single aileron on each wing

    • t-tail to start off

  • AT3530 + 14 x 7” prop

  • NACA 6512 → higher camber

  • Try one with high camber vs. low camber → gives majority of flight characteristics

    • start w 2 variance for now

  • NACA 4412 but w a higher camber

    • change just 1 factor for now
