Update Power Architecture

Description of Change

  • Power architecture changed so that there is no need for an additional 3S battery for “VBAT clean” to power the Jetson and sensors. Instead, separate buck converters will be used to create separate 5V rails.

  • The voltage of VBAT will either be 6S or 12S dependent on the results of further flight tests and if more thrust is required to be able to readjust the drone during flight

Implementation

The figure below illustrates the revised power architecture. Main change is that the 12V rail for the Jetson is made from a VBAT to 12V buck instead of using a separate 3S battery, and then the sensor 5V rail is made from a 12V-5V buck. The servo and sensor 5V rails are still separate meaning the sensors won’t be affected by servo noise.

Reason for Change

More efficient/simple and don’t need the extra weight from the extra battery. Simpler design also means less dependencies and potential points for failure.

Impact of Not Responding to Change

Previous drone power architecture would still be functional, but some parts would be unnecessary/less efficient.
