2024 Comp Drone | Cabin | @Alison Thompson |
Task Description
We want something (as light as possible!) that mounts to the 30mmx30mm M3 grid on the bottom of the drone and provides a base for the cabin pieces to be mounted to.
Constraints
Constraints | Written By | Append Date |
---|---|---|
Keep it light! Try and use the minimum number of pieces possible. | @Alison Thompson | 2023/09/30 |
This will have to support the max 500g cargo + aero panels + interior + 4 Barbies | @Alison Thompson | 2023/09/30 |
By the end of this, we should have an idea of how much space we are giving for the cargo bay and passenger cabin | @Alison Thompson | 2023/09/30 |

INITIAL IDEAS:
Wipeboard discussion in the bay, the current plan is to use thin carbon fiber tubes with tapped PEEK inserts to mount to the 30x30mm M3 grid on the bottom of the drone. 4 of these tubes can be attached to a carbon fiber plate (~1mm thick, ~4 layer layup) that can be used as the bottom of the cabin.
@Evan Janakievski to source CF tubes from Composites Canada and design the first revision of the skeleton. Tube diameter will need to be communicated to @Aric Quan for the aero-panel mounts.

First Iteration
Used 10 mm diameter cf tubes
PEEK inserts in the tubes to attach using M5 SHCS (need to change to M3s)
4 mm cf plate for the base
Used dimensions of this cf tube from Composites Canada
Notes after 10/04/23 Meeting:
redesign dimensions of skeleton to fit to barbies shoulder to shoulder
add lip on PEEK inserts that are width of the cf tube
15-20 mm in length, hole tapped through
cargo will be next to the cabin which allows for less height
Barbie dimensions:
arm max width ~ 65 mm
height sitting ~ 250 mm NEED ACCOUNT FOR HEAD ROOM IN HEIGHT OF SKELETON
~105 mm from bottom of foot to seat
~ 145 mm for upper body
Discussion with @Georgia Vachon Westerlund about design of skeleton and aeropanels will happen soon

FOR AEAC
Need to bring up cargo at the back instead of below and pros/cons of this.
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
Whole drone can be shorter | Barbies = crumple zone |
Only need one “floor”, can use less CF | Need to package stairs elsewhere |
I think despite equal number of pros and cons the drone being shorter and less CF is a big win and we should go with cargo at the back.

Edited dimensions of skeleton to be wider and accommodate a wider passenger section
Dimensions now are better equipped to hold cargo in the back behind passengers
Added an overhang to the peek inserts to make sure it catches the cf tube
Need to review dimensions of Barbies as current length of cf tubes is 20 cm, but I measured 25 cm as their seated height. Maybe if they are slightly reclined we can cut some height but still need head room

Barbie dimensions:
arm max width ~ 65 mm
height sitting ~ 250 mm NEED ACCOUNT FOR HEAD ROOM IN HEIGHT OF SKELETON
~105 mm from bottom of foot to seat
~ 145 mm for upper body
Foot to back width ~ 90-95 depending on how knees are bent
Adjustments to skeleton:
can lengthen base to the next holes and will gain about 90 mm
increase width of base to accommodate shoulder to shoulder of barbies sitting. Keep mounts where they are
height of tubes can be increased to about 260-275 mm while allowing head room for barbies
Idea for cabin entrance would have it on the side and allow barbies to enter and sit like this?
Or other option would be to increase width even more and have an aisle between seats/be facing inward and seats ore on the sides.

Update from AEAC sync last night, cargo bay will be behind the passenger cabin due to pros and cons above.

The holes drawn over in red are the holes used for mounting. The arrow on the pixhawk is pointing parallel with the long side of the hole mounts.
The distance between the holes is about 118 mm x 246 mm

Notes from meeting:
Dimensions of skeleton:
Switched to a dimension of about 330 mm between the mounting holes
Accommodating for the barbies and @Jason Li 's seats they will be approximately 75 mm in depth each (allowing for leg room). For two barbies it would be just around 150 mm.
This allows 160 mm for the cargo compartment in the back of the skeleton. However, leaving a bit more room would be best for “comfort” of the barbies and the longest a cargo is, is 100 mm. so using about 130-140 mm would be best.
