2024 Comp Drone | Cabin | @Alison Thompson |
Task Description
The Barbies and Cargo must be able to be loaded into their respective parts of the cabin. There is a decent amount of freedom for creativity in how we do this.

The Design for the hinge/door is ready for review
Screw locations are defined in CAD but need to decide on screw/bolt size
Locking Mechanism TBD - will decide between OTS or 3D printed, thinking of something like this: https://www.amazon.ca/INIRET-Latches,3-93-Stainless-Bi-fold-Latches/dp/B09TRBGMDH/ref=sr_1_8?crid=THX1ZW1RHX60&keywords=latches&qid=1706489263&sprefix=latches%2B%2Caps%2C113&sr=8-8&th=
A potential improvement is filling in the area under the tube to better waterproofing, but is this necessary since the roof is partially exposed? I can add a feature if requested upon discussion.

First Design failed motion study - had to redesign still in progress
Worried about gap in the bottom, may redesign to have cutouts in the bottom for brackets, rest filled in

INTIAL IDEAS
I don’t have a super fleshed-out idea for this task, you can take inspiration from the cabin door on the 2023 competition drone. Note that that solution was not perfect, feel free to explore other ideas.

Assembly wasn’t fully working when I checked so not my complete ideas.
I like the idea for it so far, maybe something we could incorporate are stairs in the long run.
If the hinge could be lowered, I think that may be best because it somewhat blocks one of the cargo compartments.
As you mentioned, the gap in the bottom isn’t too ideal, but the improvements you made from the first iteration seemed to improve it
And filling it in not sure about how necessary it is, the drone is getting waterproofed, but I think for electronics, maybe some type of flexible material could be laid over it? Something to discuss between myself, @Sohee Yoon , and leads.

The design looks pretty good so far!
Like Alison said on discord, I would be concerned about how we are keeping the door closed.
I see that the locking mechanism hasn’t been decided but def thinking about where it’ll be located and how it’ll be attached to the cabin/drone would be a great start!
I’m assuming the door is attached to the aero-panels, so do you plan on using screws or an adhesive for this? Similar point for the door being attached to the tube
In Fig 1: How will the ‘TubeHolder’ attach to the aero-panels?
How will the tube be connected to to the ‘TubeHolder’ (highlighted in green) ~ keeping in mind that it has to rotate? What kind of material are you planning to use for the tube?
I haven’t checked the assembly yet, but I’m concerned that when the door is rotating that it’ll get caught on the ‘TubeHolder’.

Hinges looking good!
would you be able to slim them down in any way? currently they seem a bit bulky, but the design overall is good.
look into latches or velcro (can incorporate the velcro into the cabin mounting I used for V2
you can make any adjustments you need to to make the assembly be able to rotate, I can remove the panel from the skeleton assembly and you can make the door a separate entity
let us know if you have any questions

I agree with @Evan Janakievskipoints!
Looks pretty good! Def could be slimmed down a bit to reduce the weight.
Incorporating nylon lock nuts would be good to prevent the nuts from any movements.
We should prob check the M3 screw lengths we have in the bay so that they are somewhat similar to the width of the hinges.

CAD REVIEW OF DOOR UPDATES:
In response to your discord message @Sohee Yoon :
I'm not super sure on tolerances for the door, maybe make it like 0.05mm smaller or something? top and bottom can stay the same, just the sides that mate with the other CF panels.
We can order bolts, don’t have to only use what we have in the bay, if EMS has bolts that will work better we can buy them.
Otherwise this looks awesome!
