Group 4 Design Proposal

Summary: 4 motor X shaped quad, with two motors attached to a rotating wing to allow dynamic transition between fixed-wing forward flight and multi-rotor takeoff-landing.

 

This design provides:

  • Increased forward thrust thanks to 2 “push/pull” motors in fixed-wing configuration

  • VTOL takeoff/landing in a quadcopter configuration.

  • Minimized weight penalty from having to have an extra large push/pull motor (offset slightly by having a tilting wing mechanism).

  • Simpler transition between fixed-wing and multi-rotor flight modes from controls perspective (as in, the transition from one state to another can be done by a pilot and will not require fancy controls mixing).
