 Goals

  • Establish what to do w/r/t the icarus program post-april-12-crash

Recap

Cornflakes crashed in water

Mechanical:

  • Wings scrapped

  • (state of H frame)??

Electrical:

  • 2 of ESCs blew up

  • Other 3 are corroded. Not likely salvageable

  • motors are damaged (at least 1

  • all of the power system is covered in corrosion

    • power module

    • Pixhawk

  • camera is damaged?

Cannot fly cornflakes or icarus this weekend

Thoughts for going forward

  • Clean all components, purchase new ones if we want to compete this year

    • probably not productive to rebuild cornflakes

  • Nix cornflakes

    • go for MVP icarus frame with vanny motors

    • lowest level of functionality to start off

  • Ground validate icarus before heading towards airtime

    • strap frame to table and spin it up

    • test autopilot

  • Take apart cornflakes and clean electronics

    • assign new members to recover these?

  • Cannot mess up again

    • lots of ground testing

    • next time it goes in the air must be very sure it works

    • video system: down to 1 camera - getting more cameras ideally? (revisit later)

  • Cleaning corrosion doesn’t mean we should put the waterlogged electronics on icarus

    • “ ESC connector issues causing a majority of our crashes.”

  • New equipment + figure out what needs to be fixed

    • need contingency on how to fix current issues like fixed wing

  • Put aside cornflakes get MVP for icarus

    • do inventory on what we do have

    • ground testing to confirm it wont fail for foreseeable reasons

  • Don’t like testing things (in the AIR) that are not yet proven on icarus

    • is it possible to get test airframe by next week (revisit questions later)

  • The costs are adding up, have to consider ending the ICARUS program if the expense grows

    • should go over inventory

    • want to fly icarus class aircraft @ comp

    • running out of most electronics, with barely any (~0) spares

    • have 1 quad motor on icarus so we have enough to run 4 assuming the ok ones on cornflakes are actually ok :|

    • push motor on cornflakes exists+ a small backup

  • can mix n match escs potentially … ($70 base cost each)

spending discussion

  • going smaller than vanny gets cheaper

  • we are way into the budget for this comp season already fact check this heeh

  1. get 1 more set for comp

  2. get 1 more + 1 spare set

  • buy 1 set of aux electronics

    • can borrow a pixhawk

    • motors 2 spares

    • spend minimum

    • run cornflakes with vanny motors last ditch scenario

    • need escs though. get 1 or 3/2 set of these

  • get 1 set we need for comp

    • foam destroyed on cornflakes so its ok

    • get some spares of what we can afford

  • just go for it and fly @ comp, bare minimum is ok

  • if we aren't confident in what we’re flying right now, no reason to be confident in what we are flying next

    • anticipate crashes in next flight test

    • this should drive our timelines

  • same issue every time with exception of 1 time (4 of the same loose connector)

    • put all the parts to icarus - buying new escs (6)

    • do not buy 2 sets for 2 airframes

  • single problem that is probably not easy to fix if we haven’t fixed it already

    • buy extras of escs

  • buy enough for spare escs and 2 spare motors

    • spent lots of time and money already so we want to try

  • have spares (at least 1 motor spare)

    • aux components? need to buy cameras?

    • spare escs

  • if we assume we crash next time, no point in flying at all

    • to continue, we have to do everything we can to make this happen - icarus should be made well

    • this or compete with vanny

    • do this properly or not at all

    • committing to icarus should be good if people working on it can commit to putting in the best work

    • assuming a crash will occur is not productive for → making icarus compete

  • might as well do things properly if we are going to buy new things

    • look @ how we replace parts on icarus - electrical failure can cause mech failures. Icarus is harder to mechanically repair than cornflakes

    • probably at least 1 set + a couple extras of escs

      • can’t keep messing these up

  • only commit to 1 more frame

    • 1 spare motor

    • escs (enough + spares)

  • minimum differs on definition - min to take off and land vs compete well BVLOS

    • spares for things that are necessary for takeoff land

    • anything aux is just to do well at comp, we don’t need spares of this

  • should invest time in thrust testing before we take to the air so we can prevent issues we see in the past

  • 1 set and a few extras seems fair

  • backup plan

    • need to account for case in which we crash because it may happen

    • spend time to mitigate this

    • anything on vanny is probably the last ditch

      • vanny reparable

can make cornflakes MVP/ ?

  • spend time on this instead of icarus (drop icarus for comp → run cornflakes instead?

  • more repairable, cheaper

  • less time & integ to make cornflakes MVP compared to Icarus.

  • All icarus components no longer re-usable.

    • crashing cornflakes one more time → season over GG go next WP

    • ^ same thing applies to Icarus.

  • Icarus not far away from cornflakes base level?

  •

(anni share screen instead? i need to go get food +water) gg gl atlas

@Nathan Green to send specific 2 components we need for the power module

  • “Options to buy:

    • - Nothing (no competition).

    • - Bare minimum (no spare).

    • - Bare minimum + spare.

    • Can be different options for each piece of equipment (e.g. auxiliary (airspeed sensor, etc.), motors, ESCs).”

  • should establish rigorous QA practices for all electronics.

  • start** flying ICARUS

  • one point five of ESC (7.5 → 7)

  • 2 motor

  • Power Module components

  • no : pdb, vtx, rfd,

  • 4 6s batteries

Week of the 14th:

  • anni 2 go broke

  • alison to make frame go brr

  • questions on control horns ??

  • anni to start laying out electronics when possible.

week of the 17th:

  • Anni to solder ESC’s

  • Nathan to be here on the weekend → PMO & Harnessing & ESC check.

  • Attempt ground checks on weekend of 22.

Week of the 24th:

  • continued ground tests.

  • flight test 29th? !? ?! ?! ?! ?! ?!? ?! ?! ?! ?! ?! ?! ? !? !? !? !? ?! ?! ?! ?! ?! ?! ?! ?! ?! ?! ?! ?! ?!?
