2022/09/25 Work Session Updates

Action items from last week - check whiteboard in bay

  • Get updates on bootcampers progress for the team roster - incomplete

  • Sign the safety sheet

  • Build the fixed wing in the bay (spike replica) - task modified

Updates
Spike replica in the bay had pieces missing, could not build the original and we weren’t sure exactly what parts were missing that we needed to source. Solution: build an entire new fixed wing from scratch (1.524 m wingspan) out of foam board from dollarama.

Progress with fixed-wing EFS test plane (Judy)

  • Shell constructed in under 2 hours

  • Electronics implemented in under 1 additional hour

  • Maiden flight lasted 10 seconds approximately and did not result in a successful landing.* Damage to the plane included 2 broken 10x4 propellers and a slightly crushed nose. Everything else was intact

Reasons for uncontrolled landing

  • Slightly tail heavy

  • Build was prototype-quality

  • Flying in non-ideal lighting

  • Sizing and controls were not optimized

Action items to improve the plane

  • Reconstruct nose

  • Add landing gear for smoother takeoff

  • Adjust COM

* Judy was flown by a licensed pilot. It should be noted this was not an official WARG flight. Judy will be flown again in more optimal conditions and those following flights should be used instead for official content/marketing/publicity/actual testing content.

Video is below for context. Everybody directly involved had agreed to be there and take responsibility for their own safety.
